Colombia - Point 80
Round Square Conference: Colombia

Six Upper School students traveled to Colombia for the Round Square conference “Blooming from the Past,” where they explored how history shapes the future through dialogue and cultural exchange. Their experience included a four-day Amazon pre-conference, cultural immersion in Boyacá, and homestays in Bogotá.

Jehva ’28 welcomed Lina from Colegio Los Nogales in Colombia for a three-week visit to Providence Day School. During her stay, Lina shared a presentation about her home country with second-grade students and beginning Spanish classes, fostering cross-cultural understanding.

Round Square Conference: England

Six Middle School students attended Milton Abbey School’s “Leadership and Adventure” conference in Dorset, England, where they developed leadership skills through teamwork, problem-solving, and creative workshops. Their week included outdoor adventures like giant paddle boarding and mud trails, as well as beach and water sports, farm and cooking projects, and a cultural visit to London.

Six Upper School students participated in an interactive student dialogue hosted by GEMS New Millennium School in the UAE. Together, 150 students from Argentina, Canada, Chile, India, South Africa, UAE, USA, and UK discussed “Global Connectivity: Building Bridges for a Sustainable Future” while sharing posters exploring how sustainability is uniquely practiced at a micro level in each school and a macro level in each student’s home country.

Six Upper School students participated in a Round Square Zoom Postcard hosted by Áleph School in Peru, exploring the theme “The Silent Killers: Corruption and Terrorism Drain the Economy.” The session brought together 70 participants from 13 schools across seven countries, with students preparing in advance by reading a NATO Review article and coming ready to discuss the topic in depth.

A team of PD Middle School students planned, designed, and facilitated a student dialogue entitled “What’s Trending: Tech, Teens, and Talk.” More than 100 students participated, representing 19 schools in 9 countries including Argentina, Armenia, Canada, India, Perú, South Africa, UAE, and the USA.

Round Square Exchange: Australia

Ainsley ’26, Emma ’28, and Isla ’28 spent four weeks on the Sunshine Coast of Australia at Matthew Flinders School, immersing themselves in the local school and community, including snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef. They later hosted students in return during the school year, including participating in a podcast about their experiences.
South Africa- Point 86
Round Square Exchange: South Africa

Jehva ’28 and Charlotte ’27 spent three weeks over the summer at Dainfern College in South Africa, immersing themselves in the local school community and culture. They later hosted their exchange student, Keanda, in Charlotte during April, sharing their own community and daily life while continuing to build cross-cultural friendships.
Round Square International Service Project: South Africa

Two Upper School students participated in the Round Square International Service Project in South Africa, contributing to the construction of a permanent kindergarten building and supporting the Lesego One Million Beehives initiative. Their experience combined hands-on work in sustainable agriculture and beekeeping with cultural learning at Johannesburg’s Apartheid Museum, while developing leadership, teamwork, and life skills.
Germany- Point 87
Round Square Exchange: Germany

Savannah ’28 and Sarina ’28 spent three weeks in March at Landheim Ammersee in Germany, with one staying at the boarding school and the other participating in a homestay. Their experience allowed them to immerse themselves in German culture and school life while building lasting connections with their hosts, who will come to Providence Day in the Fall.

Educational Travel: Ecuador

Ten Middle School students traveled to the Galápagos Islands to explore evolution, biodiversity, and environmental sustainability through hands-on scientific research and immersive experiences. Their program included wildlife surveys, snorkeling, conservation projects, visits to the Charles Darwin Research Station and local sanctuaries, and guided studies of iconic species like iguanas, sea lions, and giant tortoises.
Scandinavia - Point 89
Educational Travel: Scandinavia

Ten Upper School students traveled to Denmark and Sweden to explore Scandinavian design, sustainability, and urban innovation. Their journey included visits to an energy-neutral island, biodynamic farm, and revitalized urban center, along with interactive experiences at sites like the LEGO House and repurposed industrial spaces, highlighting the region’s fusion of functionality, play, and environmental responsibility.
South Korea - Point 90
Educational Travel: South Korea

Twelve Upper School students traveled to South Korea to participate in the Cheongshim International Academy Model UN conference, engaging in debates and cultural exchange with international peers. Their program also explored Korean history, Buddhism, and the peninsula’s political and economic landscape, providing insights into both the division between North and South Korea and the country’s rapid development and modern youth culture.

Michelle Garrity, Middle School math teacher, traveled throughout South Korea to learn more about her birthplace of Busan while experiencing the country’s rich culture. From Haeundae Beach in Busan and the Golgulsa Buddhist temple in Gyeongju to Namdaemun Market in Seoul and the DMZ, she enjoyed exploring both cities and the countryside, discovering history, food, and community along the way.

Cultural Visit: France

Providence Day families hosted a group of 15 French students from Notre Dame De La Merci in Montpellier, France. While in Charlotte, French students attended PDS classes, toured Uptown, visited Discovery Place, and participated in a day-long leadership outdoor course at the Whitewater Center.

Global Educator Certificate: Uruguay

Nine faculty and staff members from the Lower, Middle, and Upper School traveled to Uruguay to explore the country’s innovative approaches to sustainability, environmental justice, and leadership. Their program combined immersive experiences with local communities, lessons on policymaking, renewable energy, and sustainable agriculture, and explorations of both urban and rural contexts to understand Uruguay’s unique history, culture, and progressive environmental initiatives.

Round Square Conference: Kenya

Five student delegates traveled to Nairobi, Kenya, to represent PD at the Round Square Conference themed “The New Africa.” Following a pre-conference experience on the Maasai Mara Reserve, the students joined the conference to explore the way the continent has evolved and discuss its positioning for the 21st century.

Four Middle School student delegates represented Providence Day at the Middle School Round Square Conference in Atlanta, GA. The theme “Imagine the Future” allowed students to explore developments and challenges associated with life in the 21st century through listening to speakers, engaging in student discussions, and participating in activities designed to foster engaged citizens.

Finley McGrath ‘26 spent 4 weeks during the summer at Colegio San Silvestre in Lima, Peru. Reciprocally, Providence Day welcomed her host student, Francesca, for the month of January.

Elise Atkinson ’26 spent 4 weeks in July at the Matthew Flinders School on the Sunshine Coast of Australia. Her host student, Jasmine, joined the Providence Day community in October.
Colombia - Point 63
Round Square Exchange: Colombia

Ignacio, a Colombian exchange student, joined the Providence Day community from Colegio Nogales. During his three-week visit, he shared the history and culture of Colombia with Spanish 2 and Spanish 4 classes while attending classes of his own.

Three Upper School students participated in an interactive student dialogue about the UN Sustainable Development Goals hosted by Dainfern College in South Africa. Participants were asked to create and share activism posters related to world issues (including climate change, gender equality, and poverty) in order to raise awareness in a creative form.

Eight Middle School students participated in an interactive student dialogue hosted by McLachlan College in Ontario, Canada. Together, students discussed “The Importance of Critical Thinking” before examining hypothetical philosophical scenarios in small group breakout rooms.

During this interactive student dialogue, Global Studies Diploma students and members of the Sustainability Club joined students from Aiglon College in Switzerland to learn how Aiglon secured its first and second Eco Schools green flag awards and how other schools can implement similar initiatives.

Upper School physics teacher Jennifer Haney traveled to Geneva, Switzerland, to visit the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the European Center for Nuclear Research. Experiments at CERN are on the cutting edge of particle physics and exemplify international collaboration in science.

A team of PD Middle School students planned, designed, and facilitated a student dialogue entitled “Food is Love: School Lunches Around the World.” More than 100 students participated representing 19 schools in 10 countries including Bangladesh, Canada, Colombia, India, Kenya, Namibia, South Africa, Switzerland, UK, and the USA.

Third grade students presented “Introducing our School” and “Traditional Games in our Country” during World Wide Show & Tell sessions hosted by Round Square. Fourteen schools representing six countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, India, South Africa, and the USA, participated.
Thailand - Point 69
Round Square Big Build: Thailand

Four Upper School students and two faculty members joined delegates from 22 international Round Square schools to work together in the Kui Buri National Park in southern Thailand. The project had an environmental focus, with some students working with elephants and studying hornbills in a human/wildlife coexistence project and others taking on a Big-Build, working together to construct a community education center out of mud cobb.

Upper level Spanish students engaged in a four-week Spanish Language virtual exchange with students from SEK-Ciudalcampo International School in Madrid. The weekly dialogues alternated being conducted in English and Spanish.

Middle School students visited historic sites in Greece to explore how mythology, archaeology, and philosophy continue to shape contemporary Greece.

Upper School students explored the mix of ancient traditions and modern technology that define Japan. Visiting both ancient temples and cosmopolitan Tokyo, students examined the roots of anime and the influence of various cultures on Japanese society, as well as questioned how to conserve a valued past while embracing technological and sustainable development.

Educational Travel: Iceland

Upper School students journeyed to Iceland to explore the frontiers of climate change. Students connected with the country’s dynamic environment by exploring environmental issues, the topography, and the relationship between humans and nature.

Cultural Visit: India

Visiting monks from the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center in Northern India created a World Peace Mandala. Over the course of four days, Lower, Middle, and Upper School classes visited the Fine Arts Foyer to observe the creation of the mandala using special tools and brightly colored sand. The visit culminated with a closing ceremony on the International Day of Peace.

Author, lawyer, and consular affairs expert David Stewart spent a day with the PD community. During school hours, he delivered a presentation on the current state of U.S. immigration and citizenship laws and visited a French 1 class. In the evening, he held a book talk discussing his memoir, Home Away from Home: Immigrant Identity and the Canadian Expat Experience.

After hosting French student, Julia, at Providence Day in August, Sophie Hawk ‘25 visited Lycée Notre Dame de la Merci in Montpellier, France, for a three-week cultural exchange visit.

8th grade Global Perspectives teacher Brian Field traveled to Israel and visited sites important to the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian faiths. He also learned about multiple minority groups, including the Druze and Roma, spent several nights in the West Bank, and visited a Palestinian refugee camp.

Upper School History Department Chair Ted Dickson traveled throughout Central Europe and visited Round Square partner schools to discuss history course pedagogy and investigate how people who were murdered in the Holocaust are memorialized. He compared the European memorial sites to those honoring civil rights martyrs and lynching victims in the Southern United States. Cities visited included Zurich, Munich, Dachau, Nuremberg, Weimar, Buchenwald, Berlin, Salzburg, Venice, Florence, and Rome.

Upper School teacher Kinga Zay visited four Round Square Schools in Germany to observe the implementation of the Round Square IDEALS of Internationalism, Democracy, Environment, Adventure, Leadership, and Service. The trip included three boarding school visits across Germany and a visit to a day school near Munich.

Round Square Conference: United Kingdom

Student delegates traveled to Oxford University to represent PD at the Round Square Conference themed “Take Less: Be More.” On the coast of Wales they explored the global issues of conservation and sustainability through activities including a visit to a Bug Farm and coasteering.

Pam Heacock, Assistant Head of Lower School, and Erica Katz, LS Teacher attended a Round Square Workshop in Oxford, England to learn about the Heroes of Discovery program. This program aims to bring the 12 attributes of the Round Square Discovery Framework to life for younger students in grades K-8.

Two PD students, Ivy Greer Dyer ’26 and Cate Brinley ‘26 spent two separate weeks in March on an exchange to Bermuda High School for Girls in Pembroke, Bermuda.

Julia Maybry ‘25 spent 4 weeks at Colegio San Silvestre in Lima, Peru. Reciprocally, her host student Liyi, joined the Providence Day community for the month of March.

Five Upper School students participated in a student-led Round Square dialogue about the impact of stand-up comedy on modern society entitled “Healing the World Through Comedy” hosted by St. George’s College in Lima, Peru.

Raya Bose ‘26 attended Colegio Los Nogales, in Bogotá, Colombia for two weeks in March. Her host student, Natalia then attended PD for two weeks, giving presentations on Colombia to Upper School Spanish 2 classes as well as Lower School classes.

Charlotte Kraus ‘25 spent a month at Schule Schloss Salem, a boarding school in Baden-Württembrg, Germany. German student, Greta, then joined the Providence Day community for a month.
Cultural Visit: Germany

An Upper School student from Germany joined the sophomore class at PD for six weeks in the fall. While at PD, he graciously visited our second grade classes to share a presentation about life in his home country.
Armenia - Point 48

4 Upper School students joined a student dialogue hosted by Shirakatsy Lyceum, a Round Square school in Armenia. Students from countries around the world shared their personal childhood heroes, while small discussion groups focused on why we consider people heroes and identified common characteristics.

Two Upper School PD students participated in a Round Square Postcard in honor of International Women’s Day hosted by the MLC School in Australia. Participants shared research on employment fields in their respective countries and identified those with the greatest and least gender disparity and gender pay gap. The conversation explored how to promote innovation for a gender equal future.

St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School, Canada hosted a Round Square student-led discussion on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion within STEM. In small breakout groups, five Upper School PD student participants presented their research and discussed individuals who made pivotal discoveries within their fields.

Stanford Lake College, South Africa hosted a Round Square student dialogue titled “Mental Health Awareness” where students shared the challenges and stigmas facing students struggling with mental health issues. Six PD Upper School students participated in the discussion.

Global Studies Assistant Suzanne Clements traveled to Morocco and learned about the values and culture of a country with a younger population at a crossroads–deeply Islamic with a growing secular society, valuing tradition, while embracing modernity.

Lower School teacher Shavonn Perkins traveled to Japan to bring her lived experience back to the PD second grade social studies curriculum, which centers around the seven continents. Aside from culture and geography, Perkins focused on learning traditional Japanese dances to share with students.

Tosha Arriola, Assistant Head of Upper School, learned about mindfulness and meditation techniques while in Thailand. To further explore Thai culture, she took a cooking class, worked one-on-one with a batik artist, and visited 20 temples, as well as an elephant sanctuary.

Upper School students experienced language and cultural immersion in Seville, Spain while living with a host family and taking daily language classes. Travel included visits to Granada to see the Alhambra, Cádiz for a taste of Spanish beach life, and Madrid to indulge in local delicacies while enjoying iconic sites.

Upper School students were immersed in French culture and language through participation in an exchange at Lycée Notre Dame de La Merci in Montpellier, France. The students lived with a French host family, attended classes, and enjoyed visits to iconic French sites in both Montpellier and Paris. The students then reciprocally received the French students for a relationship deepening exchange at PD.

An Upper School student from Finland joined PD’s junior class for the spring semester. While here, he shared presentations about his home country with Lower School students.

Round Square Conference: England

Five Upper School students were selected to represent PD at the Round Square International Conference. The virtual conference titled “Blue Skies and Brave Conversations” featured a custom 2D world with video conferencing and retro-style gaming. Each day the students experienced a keynote session, followed by interactive discussion groups, student presentations, and student-led activities.

Four Upper School students participated in two student-led dialogue sessions with the topics “Dynamics of World Economics” and “Living Our Dreams.” During the first dialogue, students exchanged their experiences and ideas about how the pandemic has impacted their respective countries' economies. In the second dialogue, students explored how fears can inhibit accomplishing dreams through sharing their experiences of failure and doubt, as well as the coping strategies that helped them achieve their goals.

As students coped with the changes due to the pandemic, six Middle School students represented PD in a student-led dialogue with 70 participants from 13 schools in 9 countries, hosted by Aubrick Multilingual Bilingual School in Brazil. Students listened to a speaker discuss the importance of self-care and then shared strategies for coping with stress, as well as examples of how they practiced self-care.
South Africa - Point 33
Round Square Postcard: South Africa

Upper School students participated in two student dialogues hosted by South African schools. The topics were “Uniform or Not?”(hosted by St. Stithian’s Girls College) and “Women in Sports” (St. Andrews School for Girls). Five PD students joined 65 delegates discussing the topic of school uniforms and hair policies and their cultural significance across the globe. Four PD student-athletes joined students from 21 schools in 8 different countries for a global conversation about gender inequality in sports.

Round Square Spanish Language Lab: Chile

Upper School students participated in hour-long, Spanish conversations designed for participants who were keen to practice and develop their language skills. Hosted by Craighouse School located in Chile, there were over 30 students from schools in India, Canada, Peru, Chile, Bahamas, Germany, France, and Kenya.

PD kindergarten classes connected virtually with peers at the Collingwood School in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to discuss their commonalities and differences.
Puerto Rico - Point 36
Educational Travel: Puerto Rico

"Community, Culture, and Comida"
Upper School students traveled to Puerto Rico to learn about the effects of Hurricane Maria, and to learn about efforts to regrow small farm holders’ long-term capacity for food production, distribution, and sales. Along the way, they explored some of the natural wonders of Puerto Rico including El Yunque rainforest and bioluminescent bays.
Alaska - Point 37
Educational Travel: Alaska

“Off the Map”
Upper School students explored Alaska, the largest and most sparsely populated state in the United States. They got a glimpse of North America’s tallest peak: Denali, drove along the Cook Inlet to the Kenai Peninsula, and hiked near Exit Glacier to see the 700-square-mile Harding Icefield. Bonding along the way, they experienced the beautiful Alaskan wilderness from mountains to sea life during this incredible adventure.
Arizona - Point 38
Educational Travel: Arizona

“Canyons, Climate, and Conservation”
Middle School students traveled to Arizona and enjoyed its iconic natural sights. They worked with the National Park Service and the Grand Canyon Trust to learn about how important preservation, sustainability, and water are in the West, stargazed at Lowell Observatory, and explored landmarks such as the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and Sedona.
California - Point 39

“Asian Culture and Natural Wonders”
Middle School students visited San Francisco to learn about Asian culture through visits to Angel Island, the Asian Art Museum, a noodle cooking class, and a tour of Chinatown. Along the way, they appreciated the natural wonders of Muir Woods and Golden Gate Bay.
Wales - Point 40
Global Educator Certificate: Wales

Upper School science teacher Jennifer Haney traveled to Wales to study medieval structures, including castles and bridges for her engineering and physics courses.
Iceland - Point 41
Global Educator Certificate: Iceland

Upper School teacher Jennifer Bray visited Iceland to study the country's varied physical geography, long democratic history, unique culture and language, and commitment to gender equality and sustainability. The trip included a visit to the private residence of the Icelandic President and First Lady, a bit of volcanic hiking, and explorations of glacial lagoons.
