Sports Medicine, Strength & Conditioning

Sports Medicine: Our sports medicine department exists to ensure our student-athletes receive quality medical care while participating in athletics and physical education classes. In 2015 we were awarded the National Safe Sports School 1st Team Award, an award that champions safety and recognizes secondary schools that provide safe environments for student athletes. Our goal is to provide accurate and timely injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, return to play protocol, and education to our athletes and Providence Day community. Our athletic training room is comparable to most college training rooms. As health care professionals, our three, licensed and nationally certified athletic trainers work with team physicians, Dr. Bruce Cohen and Dr. Shadley Schiffern, ensuring all student-athletes receive quality medical care. Our staff is available during and after the school day, and are present at all home practices and sporting events, and coordinate coverage with our opponents at away events.

Strength and Conditioning: Providence Day School’s strength and conditioning program is a four-year consecutive recipient of the prestigious Strength in America Award for its commitment to health, wellness, and sports performance. Only eighteen schools in the entire country received the award in 2013. PDS houses two of the very best strength and conditioning facilities in the nation including two state-of-the-art weight rooms and a full-time CSCS certified strength and conditioning coach. The Wellness Center is located in the Mosack Athletic Center and the Sports Weight Room is located in the Field House. Both facilities are state of the art and utilized by the entire PDS community including faculty & staff, physical education classes, and students.

Concussion information: At Providence Day, we view all concussions as potentially serious and take a very serious approach ensuring that the student-athlete’s well-being is the first priority. Our sports medicine staff collects pre-concussion data on athletes by doing ImPACT Testing and using a Sport Concussion Assessment Tool. These are just two tools that can be used in assessing a student-athlete once a concussion is suspected. In compliance with Gfeller-Waller Concussion Awareness Act, any student-athlete suspected of having a concussion is removed from play and must follow a strict return to play protocol. If a student-athlete reports any symptoms of concussion, or if a parent notices the symptoms or sign of a concussion, a student-athlete should be immediately removed from play and reported to our training staff. Learn more about our Emergency Action Plan and Concussion Protocol

Education: Parents and Students, please visit the “Heads Up” page from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and take this FREE online course entitled “Concussion in Sports”. All of our coaches undergo in-depth concussion training and are CPR/AED certified through the Red Cross Association.

Student-Athlete Physicals: Before students can tryout or participate on any of the Charger athletic teams, a physical must be completed or updated and be on file with the Athletic Training office. Forms can be accessed through the Magnus Health portal.
