Kindergarten and Middle School Students Collaborate on Enduring Weaving Project

An ongoing collaborative/cross-divisional weaving project is being expanded in the kindergarten hallway at Providence Day School.

The project, created together by kindergarten and Middle School students, is a “sensory wall” that students are encouraged to touch as they pass it.

The project, which began in 2015, involves kindergarten students each bringing in three yards of ribbon or fabric, usually from items of significance to them — strips from blankets they once used, T-shirts they once wore or drapes that once hung in their nurseries.

Andrea Downs’ Middle School art classes then work with each of the kindergarten classes in the Kindergarten Treehouse room to work help the students weave their strips into black plastic fencing (loom).

“Each student’s section of fabric or ribbon is labeled with their names,” said Downs, “so that when they graduate from PDS, they will be given their ribbon as a visible and tangible reminder of being a PDS ‘lifer.’”

The latest additions will create a fourth panel for the sensory wall. Plans are to continue the project between kindergarten and Middle School art classes each year in the spring.
