In honor of Black History Month, SPEAK has invited historian Dr. Tom Hanchett to join us for US lunch (12:45-1:30 pm) on February 13, for a presentation “How Charlotte Got Segregated.” Learn about the private and public decisions that have pushed people apart over time, and explore how decisions today are beginning to bring us together. Click here to RSVP for the event.
Dr. Hanchett earned degrees in history and urban studies at Cornell, University of Chicago and UNC Chapel Hill. He is best known for his 16 years as Staff Historian with Levine Museum of the New South and for his book about Charlotte entitled Sorting Out the New South City. He also writes the “Food From Home” column in the Observer, exploring Charlotte’s international cultures. In 2015, Charlotte Magazine honored him as a Charlottean of the Year. www.HistorySouth.org
