Arts in Middle School

Middle School chorus on stage performing during a concert

Performing Arts

Providence Day offers a comprehensive Middle School performing arts program where students can explore and develop their passions in band, chorus, orchestra, theatre, and technical theatre. Our musical ensembles and theatre groups perform both on and off campus, participating in local and state competitions and festivals. Whether students are interested in performing on stage or working behind the scenes, there is a place for them in the performing arts at Providence Day. Additionally, students can engage in extracurricular activities such as Middle School theatre plays and musicals, as well as various musical ensembles and performances. Our programs nurture young performing artists by fostering confidence, teamwork, and an appreciation for the performing arts, while developing talent and helping students reach their full potential.

Additional performance and growth opportunities are available through master class opportunities and visiting artists as well as PD's membership and participation in national and regional organizations such as the National Association for Music Education, North Carolina Music Educators Association, and the North Carolina Theatre Conference.

Visual Arts

Our Visual Arts program aims to inspire a lifelong appreciation of the arts in our students while cultivating a deep understanding of the diverse roles art plays in society. We equip students with the skills to create, interpret, and critically assess artistic meaning within our contemporary world. Our curriculum encourages students to develop a unique vision, personal voice, and a creative spirit, promoting both a willingness to take risks and a strong work ethic.

Our curriculum is designed to build progressively from foundational courses in Middle School to advanced techniques, broader media exploration, and more personalized projects in Upper School. As a process-oriented department, we emphasize technical skill development, conceptual thinking, critical analysis, aesthetic appreciation, and cultural context, fostering well-rounded and thoughtful artists.

For more information on our performing and visual arts departments, please contact Michael Hough, Performing Arts Department Chair and Band Director, or Lindsay Woog, Visual Arts Department Chair and Middle School Art Teacher.
