Providence Day dedicates new Tennis Cabana to memory of Deven Sawyer

On Monday, March 4, Providence Day Head of School, Dr. Glyn Cowlishaw led the dedication ceremony of the new cabanas installed on the Charger tennis courts to the memory of PD student Deven Sawyer. The ceremony was attended by many from the Providence Day community including family, friends, teachers, coaches, students and teammates from the Charger tennis team. The center cabana bench now includes a plaque "Dedicated in Loving Memory Of Our Teammate Deven Sawyer." The plaque also reflects the many character traits that Deven so frequently exhibited: compassion, empathy, kindness, and gentle-spirit. Each of the two additional cabanas on the courts also contain plaques; one simply states "Kindness" while the other "Compassion."

In addition to Dr. Cowlishaw's remarks, head tennis coach Robert Stephens talked about Deven's character and confidence in his tennis game. Fellow teammates Alex Sandoval and Marc Sturisky also took a few minutes to talk about their great friendship with Deven and told stories that reiterated his compassion, empathy and kindness.

The goal and hope of the dedication is that the character traits so exemplified by Deven Sawyer will be remembered, not only today, but every day moving forward.
