2020 PD ESPY Award Recipients

The Providence Day PD ESPY awards program recognizes outstanding performances from individuals, teams, coaches, and fans during the school athletic year. Important information and required forms for participating in 2020 Fall athletics at Providence Day

Unlike the NCHSAA, Providence Day School and the NCISAA (our state affiliation) still requires individual physicals to be completed within the last 13 months before being allowed to participate in athletics.There are three forms that need to be completed. The NCISAA Cancels Spring Sports

April 24, 2020 - Today the NCISAA announced that effectively immediately, the 2020 Spring Season has officially been canceled. There will be no regular season activities, playoffs or championships. Additionally, they will not have Spring 2020 all-state teams, nor will there be Wells Fargo Cup winners.

Providence Day has eight individuals named to the All-Charlotte Observer Boys and Girls Track and Field teams

On April 7, The Charlotte Observer announced their All-Charlotte Observer Girls and Boys Track and Field teams. The Chargers were well represented with eight individuals selected.

Eliza Cardwell was chosen first team in the girls’ long jump. She jumped 17-10.5 to win the JDL Independent Invitational earlier in the season.

Eliza Cardwell and Kevin Sangmuah named Strength and Conditioning All-American

According to Providence Day's Strength and Conditioning Coach, Tom Caruso, the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) recently named Providence Day's Eliza Cardwell and Kevin Sangmuah their All-American Athletes of the Year Award." The NCSA recognizes those collegiate and high school athletes whose athletic accomplishments reflect their dedication to strength training and conditioning.

Providence Day hires Chad Grier as new head football coach for the Chargers

March 17, 2020 - Providence Day’s Director of Athletics Nancy Beatty announced today the hiring of Chad Grier as the Chargers new head football coach. “I am extremely excited for the future of our Providence Day Football program!  We are fortunate to have Coach Grier as our next leader. His passion is contagious and his record and experience are exemplary.” Coach Grier comes from Oceanside Collegiate Academy in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, where he was their head coach since 2017 and Athletic Director since 2018.  Prior to his time at Oceanside Collegiate Academy, he was the head football coach at Davidson Day School since 2010.

Providence Day partners with New Age Flag Football for K through 8th Grade Students

New Age Flag Football was founded by former Carolina Panther, Charles Johnson and exists to provide families in the Greater Charlotte Metropolitan Area with a fun, safe, competitive environment while promoting the development of healthy living, social skills, and athletic ability. New Age Flag Football is a coed league for children in Kindergarten through 8th Grade. Children of all skill sets can join.

NCISAA Suspends all Spring Sports effective Friday, March 13

From the NCISAA - As a result of the COVID-19 virus threat to our communities, the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association has suspended all spring sports indefinitely. Suspension of all interscholastic games, scrimmages and/or contests begins Friday, March 13, and will continue until further notice. Member schools may conduct practice and/or training sessions at their discretion. Continued...

Providence Day wins 17th NCISAA girls basketball championship with a twist - as an underdog

Providence Day won its 17th N.C. Independent Schools girls state championship Saturday, beating Greensboro Day 48-44 in front of a large, vocal crowd at Charlotte Latin School. But this one felt a little different.The Chargers (24-6) weren’t the favorites. They didn’t have a McDonald’s All-American or N.C. player of the year. This Chargers team, small and guard heavy, felt a little more mortal than the giants that came before it.

Charger alum Isaac Johnson '16 reaches the 1,000 point milestone at App State

Providence Day alum, Isaac Johnson '16, recently scored his 1,000 point for the  Appalachian State men's basketball team when the Mountaineers defeated Georgia Southern 62-57. Isaac becomes the 34th player in App State program history to reach the 1,000 career point milestone. He was one of the key members of the team, along with Grant Williams, Devon Dotson,Trey Wertz and Josh Howard, who went on to win the 2016 NCISAA 4A Men's Basketball State Championship.

PD's Varsity Wrestling team is the 2020 NCISAA Wrestling Co-Champions

February 15, 2020 - After finishing four times as runner-up, one time in third place, and three times in fourth place over the past ten years, the Providence Day Wrestling team is now the 2019-20 NCISAA Wrestling Co-Champions. Led by state champions Pearce Phillips (113lbs), Caden Hagler (120lbs), and Kevin Sangmuah (182lbs), the Chargers secured a share of the state championship for the first time in school history.

JV Girls Basketball wins the CISAA Championship; Chargers end the season undefeated

The JV Girls Basketball team hosted the Charlotte Christian Knights Saturday morning in the championship game of the CISAA Conference. The Girls led throughout the game and despite a strong comeback attempt by the Knights in the fourth quarter, the Girls pulled away with some great team play, hustle and defense and took home the championship trophy, 44-35. The team ended the season undefeated with a 9-0 record and 5-0 in conference play.

Providence Day celebrates seven student-athletes signing on National Letter of Intent (NLI) day

Providence Day School celebrated seven student-athletes signing national letters of intent committing to continue their academic and athletic careers at the college level. Today’s signing included two student–athletes continuing to play soccer, two to play baseball, and one each for basketball, football, and track.

Providence Day Wrestlers finish runner-up in the CISAA Conference Championships

The Charger Wrestling team once again had a strong performance in the 2020 CISAA conference wrestling championships finishing in the runner-up position behind the Charlotte Latin Hawks. The Chargers had five wrestlers earning All-Conference honors and three others finishing in the runner-up position. Congrats to All-Conference Pearce Phillips (113lb), Caden Hagler (120 lb), Joey Ricco (126lb), Nathaniel Insko (145lb), and Kevin Sangmuah (182lb)
