At Providence Day School, social responsibility is taught throughout all grades and across the curriculum by cultivating a sense of connection to our community and the world while taking action to improve the lives of others. The Lower School focuses on exploring community service opportunities, developing gratitude, and reflecting on these learnings. Middle School students build empathetic listening skills, partner with students in local schools, and reflect on making a difference. 

Once in Upper School, students engage in a variety of initiatives on and off campus to understand and impact the realities of community development. Students of Service (SOS) is a group of dozens of student-centered service clubs under the social responsibility umbrella that work with area organizations to support community needs. Thousands of people and numerous non-profits across the city benefit from these student-led initiatives.

In the fall of 2019, PD clubs accomplished these feats and more:

• Donated four gallons of blood (SOS Red Cross)

• Composted 49 pumpkins (SOS Sustainability)

• Collected 8,055 items at the 12th Annual Gil Murdock Turkey Trot

• Made 100 burritos for the homeless in Charlotte (SOS Burrito Biking)

• Collected 35 lbs. of trash (SOS Creek Cleanup)

• Planted 250 trees (NOLA Tree Project)

• Provided over 300 people with afterschool tutoring support, participation in sports clinics, fun activities, a place to sleep, and time spent with new friends (multiple clubs)
