With less than 4% of competitors advancing to the championship tournament, Paul Fitzgerald ‘10 has secured a tee time at the 123rd United States Amateur Golf Championship! Over the past few weeks, eligible golfers around the country have been competing in qualifying matches in hopes of traveling to Denver, Colorado, to compete at the U.S. Amateur Championship, hosted by Cherry Hills Country Club, with Colorado Golf Club as the stroke-play co-host.

Paul is proud to call himself a Providence Day lifer. During his time at PD, he was the captain of the Varsity Golf team, as well as the captain of the Varsity football team. Paul returned to PD last year to join the Accounting and Finance Office as Accounts Payable and Expense Manager. “PD has always been like a family to me, supporting and encouraging me to be my best,” Paul noted. “I am so proud that I will be representing PD as both my alma mater and my place of work.”

This tournament will be Paul’s first time playing in a United States Golf Association (USGA)  event and will be competing against the best golfers across the world. The U.S. Amateur Championship starts on Monday, August 14. After the first two days, the top 64 will advance to match play. The winner of the tournament will receive a gold medal, their name engraved into the Havemeyer Trophy, exemption from qualifying for the next 10 U.S. Amateurs, exemption into the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club, exemption into the 2024 Open Championship, conducted by The R&A, at Royal Liverpool, and likely an invitation into the 2023 Masters Tournament. Some notable past winners include Arnold Palmer (1954), Phil Mickelson (1990), and Tiger Woods (1994, 1995, 1996).

If you want to follow along with Paul’s journey at the U.S. Amateur Championship, he will be teeing off at 2:42 p.m. at Cherry Hills Golf Club on Monday, August 14, and at 9:12 a.m. on Tuesday, August 15, at Colorado Golf Club.
