Nathan Zhang '24 Selected for All-National Honor Ensembles

Nathan Zhang ‘24, a percussionist in Providence Day School’s band, auditioned for and was selected to represent North Carolina in the National Association for Music Education 2021 All-National Honor Ensembles with conductor LaSaundra Booth.

Zhang is one of only four PD students to ever receive this honor along with Class of 2019 graduates Victor Chu (band), Nicholas Edwards (orchestra), and David Li (band). “I was really surprised when I found out that I had made it,” says Zhang. “I never thought I would get to play with the best of the best in the nation and I look forward to collaborating with talented students from all over the country. Although it is going to be virtual, I am still excited to participate.”

In order to qualify to audition for an All-Nation Ensemble, a band student must first audition and make their All-District Band and their All-State Band.  Students who make their state's All-State band are then eligible to submit a virtual audition for the All-Nation Ensembles. The audition for percussion consists of a uniform solo, an étude, and a work of the students choosing.  Only five slots are open to percussionists as part of the All-National Honor Ensembles Orchestra.

“I am so proud of Nathan,” says PD Director of Bands, Dr. Michael Hough. “It is a real honor to be selected to play in an All-Nation Ensemble.”

This year’s virtual event from January 22-24, 2022, will include several rehearsals with the 2021 All-National Honor Ensembles conductors. The event also offers workshops with clinicians, and each ensemble will create a recorded performance which will premiere online during the 37th-annual Music in Our Schools Month focusing on lessons for kindergarten and third-grade that help students learn elements of music through classic children’s songs.
