Jodie Yan '24

Jodie Yan '24 submitted her essay "Unkept Promises of Glory" to the Scholastic Writing Competition. This essay, which she originally wrote for War Literacy, went on to win a Gold Key Award! Yan's teacher, Mrs. Patricia Whelan, explains, "that Jodie would be judged superior among her peers comes as no surprise. What stands out most in her essays, beyond the easy flow of sophisticated ideas, is the way she synthesizes the ideas into a coherent whole. Students were asked to take what they had learned in the course, define war literature as a genre, and then apply that to a piece we did not discuss in class. I imagine her essay struck the judges as much more than merely an assignment fulfilled." Jodie's essay will now be automatically entered into the national "critical essay" competition.

The mission of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is to "Identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their remarkable work to the world through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The Awards give students opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships."
