Providence Day student Christine Schumer has been named the North Carolina Outward Bound School (NCOBS) scholarship recipient for 2019. Available to any rising 9th through 12th graders at PD, this scholarship was created by an anonymous PD family and allows a PDS student to attend one of NCOBS’s programs this summer. Schumer is currently in 8th grade and has been a member of the Charger community since TK. “I love hiking and things like that,” she says. “I think it will be a good experience of learning outside of the normal classroom. I think that will be interesting and more hands on.”
For nearly 50 years, NCOBS has offered challenging outdoor adventure programs for people of all ages. NCOBS is a nonprofit organization that is part of a national network of more than 75 Outward Bound schools in more than 30 countries on six continents that prepare participants to take on challenges, learn through experiences and achieve success.
The Outward Bound program shares similar core values with RoundSquare as both programs are based on the ideals of Kurt Hahn. Round Square's values of IDEALS (Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership, and Service) are similar to what the Outward Bound program exposes its participants to in an outdoor environment.
