PD Assistant Teacher Alicia D. Williams Wins 2020 Newbery Honor Book Award

Providence Day School Assistant Teacher Alicia D. Williams, part of the PD family since 2012, continues winning accolades for her debut book Genesis Begins Again. As described on amazon.com, “This deeply sensitive and powerful debut novel tells the story of a thirteen-year-old who must overcome internalized racism and a verbally abusive family to finally learn to love herself.”

This week, Genesis Begins Again was named a 2020 Newbery Honor Book awarded to "the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published in English in the United States during the preceding year." Additionally, Williams received the Coretta Scott King – Joe Steptoe New Talent Award 2020 which was established to “affirm new talent and to offer visibility to excellence in writing and/or illustration.”

Genesis Begins Again was also named a William C. Morris Finalist, NPR Favorite Book of 2019, School Library Journal Best Middle-Grade Book of 2019, and Kirkus Reviews Best Middle-Grade Book of 2019.
