Middle School Science Olympiad Team Earns 7th Place Overall

Providence Day School competed against 50 other teams in the Middle School Science Olympiad on Saturday, March 7 at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology in Charlotte, NC. The Providence Day team placed 7th overall. While only the top six places advance, for any individual event that receives 1st place but the team does not place in the top six, those students are invited to attend and compete in the State tournament at NCSU with the first place overall winners.

 Providence Day students received the following overall placements for each event:

  • Anatomy & Physiology: Morgan Boonshaft & Pavan Thakkar – 10th place

  • Boomilever: Katherine Liu – 11th place

  • Circuit Lab: Sophie Mao & Alex Mao – 2nd place

  • Codebusters Trial Event: Shravan Selvavel & Sam Chamberlain – 15th place

  • Crimebusters: Laura Plata & Katherine Liu – 4th place

  • Density Lab: Raphael Streitberger & John Oberer – 12th place

  • Disease Detectives: Karishma Kodali & Amen Ebsa – 12th place 

  • Dynamic Planet: Reed Zimmerman & Katherine Liu – 4th place 

  • Elastic Launched Glider: Zach Kahn & John Grimes – 7th place

  • Experimental Design: Karishma Kodali & Sasha Levine – 13th place

  • Food Science:  Laura Plata & Sophie Mao – 1st place (qualified for State competition)

  • Fossils: Anish Vedantham & Sophie Mao – 13th place

  • Game On Trial Event: Shravan Selvavel & Sam Chamberlain – 10th place 

  • Heredity: Pavan Thakkar & Iris Cotoman – 5th place

  • Meteorology: Pavan Thakkar & Morgan Boonshaft – 1st place (qualified for State competition)

  • Mission Possible:  Shravan Selvavel & Sam Chamberlain – 10th place

  • Mouse Trap Vehicle: Karishma Kodali & Sasha Levine – 8th place

  • Ornithology: Alex Mao & John Oberer – 2nd place

  • Ping Pong Parachute: John Grimes & Sam Chamberlain – 15th place

  • Reach for the Stars: Reed Zimmerman & Amen Ebsa – 14th place

  • Road Scholar: Zach Kahn & John Oberer – 12th place

  • Water Quality:  Reed Zimmerman & Amen Ebsa – 14th place
