One of the postponed Providence Day School campus activities during the current campus closure is the Upper School musical “Bright Star,” originally planned for mid-April. In a heartwarming twist, the legendary Steve Martin – actor, comedian, writer, musician, and writer/composer of “Bright Star” – delivered a personal word of praise to PD student participants.
Tony Award-winning Broadway actress Laura Benanti (“The Sound of Music Live!,” “Nashville”) invited students nationwide to send footage of their rehearsals for canceled or delayed high school musicals via Twitter, using the hashtag #sunshinesongs.
Several students and teachers tweeted or retweeted a video of the final “Bright Star” rehearsal before spring break, taken by Director of Bands Dr. Michael Hough. They quickly racked up thousands of views, comments, and retweets – and eventually, a Tweet from Steve Martin himself, proclaiming their song “Glorious.”
Additionally, a television station in New Jersey aired the footage of their song and other media outlets linked to it, including a national feature on Good Morning America.
