Team History and Stats
The 2010 Charger Lacrosse team is looking forward to rebounding from yet another heart breaking playoff defeat, losing to Country Day 9-8 (OT) in the NCISAA state finals. In three of the last four years, PDS has lost each playoff game by one goal, with two of those losses coming in overtime, and the other with 5.2 seconds remaining on the clock. The lone exception was the 2007 state championship which was the first in program history. Although the bar has been set high, the 2010 Chargers look to continue to build upon the tradition of PDS lacrosse.
The 2009 season had several highlights including a win over 3A state champ Charlotte Catholic, a near win vs Chapel Hill HS, the 4A state runner-up, and an overtime win over Hoggard HS on our spring break trip on which we played teams from the Raleigh/Durham and Wilmington area.
A record 17 players were lost to graduation, 6 of which were starters. However, several key pieces remain in place to ensure that PDS will be able to continue to compete with some of the best teams in the state. Toby Swimmer will anchor the attack alongside Matt Onak who saw significant playing time last season. Sam Rush will be depended on to round out the attack after he led the JV team to an undefeated season a year ago. Kevin Sherrill returns as one of the top midfielders in the state. Defensively, the Chargers will be led by returning starters James Dunville and Alex (Shadoof) Zimmerman. Will Smith and Sam Scott return to add some depth at the defensive position, along with Peter Ryan who will make the move to varsity after a strong JV season. In goal, Jake Flynn is poised to step up and uphold the long standing tradition of exceptional Providence Day goalies.
